Frequently asked questions
What do the Roman numerals mean?
They describe each chord's position in the key: I is the home chord, V the fifth, and so on. Upper case is major, lower case is minor. Because they're relative, the same numerals work in every key - which is why a progression can be moved anywhere.
Can I use these progressions in my songs?
Yes. Chord progressions aren't copyrighted - the same few loops are behind thousands of hits. What makes a song yours is the melody, lyrics and production on top.
How do I get the MIDI into my DAW?
Press MIDI on a card and drag the downloaded .mid file onto an instrument track in Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, GarageBand, Reaper or any other DAW. It's one bar per chord at the tempo you set.
What does Surprise me do?
It builds a fresh four-chord progression by walking through the moves that sound natural in the chosen key - so it's new, but it still works.
Which key should I choose for singing?
Pick the key where the melody sits comfortably in your range. If a song you like feels too high, our Pitch Shifter can move it down to test.
