How to tune a guitar, bass, ukulele or violin online
All you need is your device's microphone. This free online tuner hears the note you play and shows how far off it is, so you can tune accurately in seconds - no clip-on tuner needed.

Pick Guitar, Bass, Ukulele or Violin to see its strings, or Chromatic for any instrument, voice, or alternate tuning.
Start the tuner
Press Start tuner and allow microphone access when your browser asks. Sound is analysed live and never recorded.
Play one string
Pluck or bow one string at a time and let it ring. The nearest note and its frequency appear, with the difference in cents.
Bring the needle to the middle
If the needle leans left the string is flat - tighten it. If it leans right it's sharp - loosen it. Stop when it turns green in the centre.
Repeat for every string
Work across all the strings, then check them once more - tuning one string slightly changes the tension on the others.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't it hear me?
Allow microphone access in your browser (the icon in the address bar), make sure the right mic is selected, and play one clear note at a time - chords confuse any tuner.
What's A4 = 440?
The reference pitch the whole scale is built from. 440 Hz is the modern standard; some orchestras use 442, and some people prefer 432. Change it if your band or recording uses a different reference.
Which guitar tuning does it use?
Guitar mode shows standard tuning (E A D G B E). For alternate or drop tunings, use Chromatic - it shows whichever note you're closest to.
Is it accurate?
Yes - it reads pitch to within a couple of cents on clean notes, the same approach clip-on tuners use. A quiet room and a single sustained note help.
