How to tune a violin online

A violin is tuned in fifths: G D A E, from the lowest string to the highest. Most players tune the A first, then tune the others to it.

  1. Tune the A string first

Play the A (2nd string from the right) and tune it to A4 - 440 Hz, or set A4 to 442 if your orchestra uses it.

  2. D string

The next string down is D4.

  3. G string

The lowest, thickest string is G3.

  4. E string

The highest string is E5 - it's thin and very sensitive, so use its fine tuner.

  5. Listen to the fifths

Once the needle is green on each, play two strings together - in-tune fifths sound smooth, with no wobble.

Frequently asked questions

What are the violin string notes?

G3, D4, A4, E5 - from the lowest string to the highest, each a fifth apart.

Should I tune to 440 or 442?

440 Hz is the standard. Many orchestras tune a little higher, to 442 or 443 - set the A4 box to match your group.

Can I tune a viola or cello here?

Yes - use Chromatic mode. Viola is C3 G3 D4 A4; cello is C2 G2 D3 A3.

Is it better to bow or pluck?

Bowing gives a longer, steadier note that reads more accurately; plucking works fine for quick checks.

The reference pitch the whole scale is built from. 440 Hz is the modern standard; some orchestras use 442, and some people prefer 432. Change it if your band or recording uses a different reference.
