How to tune a guitar online, string by string

Standard guitar tuning, from the thickest string to the thinnest, is E A D G B E. This tuner listens through your microphone and shows exactly how far each string is from its note.

  1. Play the low E (6th string)

Pluck the thickest string and let it ring. Turn its peg until the needle sits green on E2.

  2. A and D strings

Next the 5th string (A2) and the 4th (D3). Pluck firmly, then let the note settle before you read it.

  3. G and B strings

The 3rd string is G3, the 2nd is B3. These thinner strings move fast - turn the peg in small steps.

  4. High E (1st string)

The thinnest string is E4, two octaves above the low E.

  5. Check them all again

Tuning one string changes the pull on the neck a little, so go across once more.

Frequently asked questions

What are the notes of standard guitar tuning?

From the thickest string to the thinnest: E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4 - often remembered as Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie.

Can I tune to drop D or open tunings?

Yes - switch to Chromatic. It shows the nearest note for anything you play, so you can tune the low string down to D or any other tuning.

Does it work for electric guitar?

Yes. Play close to your laptop or phone microphone, or through an amp in the same room. A clean sound (no distortion) reads best.

Why does the needle jump around?

Play one string at a time, let the note ring, and mute the others. The first sharp pluck is often a little high - read the note as it settles.

What's A4 = 440?

The reference pitch the whole scale is built from. 440 Hz is the modern standard; some orchestras use 442, and some people prefer 432. Change it if your band or recording uses a different reference.
